West Nile Virus

The Waukesha County Environmental Health office reported Tuesday, September 4th, that a dead crow from the City of Pewaukee tested positive for the West Nile virus (WNV).  The Wisconsin Department of Health Services website explains: “In nature. Mosquitoes become infected with WNV by feeding on infected birds and can transmit the virus to other animals, birds, and humans.”

The Waukesha County Environmental Health Department recommends the following measures to reduce risk of exposure:

• Clean our bird baths, gutters and any other areas where water can collect and mosquitoes can lay eggs
• Avoid being outside during times of high mosquito activity, specifically around dawn and dusk, especially during the Fall months
• Wear light colored protective clothing: long-sleeved shirts, long pants and tuck pants in socks when outdoors
• Use an effective mosquito repellant containing an active ingredient registered by the EPA, such as DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus
• Maintain window screens to decrease indoor contact with mosquitoes

For more information on the WNV and what this means to you please visit the following websites:
