Water and Sewer Utility Operator

The City is seeking a full-time Water Operator to maintain and operate its water and sewer facilities.  Candidates must have WI Waterworks Class G & D and must reside within 30 minutes of the City.

The starting wage for this position is $21.52 per hour, plus generous benefits.

Summary Job Description

Engages in the repair and maintenance of the municipal water and sanitary sewer facilities by performing the duties and responsibilities as set forth below. Reports to the Superintendent of the Water and Sewer Utility, and Senior Operator.

Essential Duties and Resposibilities

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

    1. Operates Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition computer system.
    2. Performs Cross Connection Control inspections.
    3. Inspects and evaluates the pump stations and pump houses daily.
    4. Reads and tests water meters.
    5. Performs water sampling and testing.
    6. Assists in the preparation of DNR and other regulatory reports.
    7. Maintains sewer and water pumping equipment, including the evaluation of same and troubleshooting.
    8. Maintains and repairs hydrants, valves and associated piping.
    9. Handles chemicals associated with water treatment.
    10. Exercises water valves and maintains valve records.
    11. Opens and closes hydrants. Supervises flushing programs.
    12. Prepares and reviews sanitary sewer and water punch lists.
    13. Inspects sanitary sewers for surface water inflow and groundwater infiltration.
    14. Inspects construction of new connections to ensure conformance with specifications.
    15. Field locates underground utilities based on record drawings.
    16. Inspects construction of new connections to ensure conformance with specifications.
    17. Directs workers in cleaning water and sewer pipes and manholes, repairing broken sewer lines, and replacing worn and damaged parts.
    18. Assists workers in repairing breaks in water and sewer mains.
    19. Operates and repairs the appurtenances of the municipal water and sewer system, including pumps, valves, motor and chemical feed devices.
    20. Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required.
  • Thorough knowledge of Federal and State Regulations pertaining to Public water Supply and Wastewater Conveyance.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State Safety Regulations.
  • Ability to read, understand, and maintain public records and files, including maps, records drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to independently analyze technical equipment and information and determine corrections and solutions.
  • Ability to serve “on-call” and available to respond in person within 30 minutes of a call.
