[ARCHIVED] Recycle Landscape Plastics

WAUKESHA COUNTY REMINDS RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES TO RECYCLE LANDSCAPE PLASTICS AT JOHNSON’S NURSERY, INC.

Recycle used fall planting containers free of charge, keep plastic out of landfills

(Waukesha, WI) – As colorful fall mums and dazzling asters start making their autumn landscape appearances, Waukesha County reminds residents and businesses to utilize Johnson’s Nursery’s free service to recycle landscape plastics not accepted in their curbside recycling containers or yard waste collections. Johnson’s Nursery, Inc. is located at W180 N6275 Marcy Road in Menomonee Falls.

“Landscaping plastic containers and trays do not belong in your curbside recycling bins or yard waste collections,” said Analiese Smith, Recycling & Solid Waste Supervisor for Waukesha County. “The cooperative program between Johnson’s Nursery and Waukesha County Parks and Land Use ensures that these materials stay out of the landfills and are properly recycled.”

Residents may drop off containers year-round during Johnson’s Nursery’s business hours. The used plastic growing pots, plant trays, and plant containers must be free of plant debris, tags, and metals, and be sorted by plastic type. Those with bulk quantities, such as businesses, are required to pre-sort, palletize, and call ahead to schedule a drop-off. Visit the retail office upon arrival for direction to the drop off area.

The used pots will be recycled and then made into new landscape plastics. Recycling plant containers diverts them from Southeastern Wisconsin landfills, keeps contaminated plastics out of the City of Milwaukee/Waukesha County Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), and closes the recycling loop. Contamination to recycling and yard waste collections by including plastic bags and landscaping plastics can damage equipment, harm employees, and degrade the final product.
